Best cup of the year: Kenya Nyeri AA on a V60
15 g, 250 g of water at 96°C, three pours, 2:50. Blackcurrant and grapefruit, exactly like the bag says. Worth every krona of shipping.

Joined last night after my sister would not stop talking about the latte art throwdown. I brew with a Moka pot and a hand-me-down blade grinder, and I’m saving up for something better. What should I learn first: dialing in or milk?
My kitchen scale only does 1 g steps. Good enough for V60, or is a coffee scale worth it?
Picked up the Guji Natural from the last drop and my shots are bright to the point of sour. I’m at 18 g in, 32 g out in 24 seconds at 93°C on a single-boiler machine with flat burrs. It smells like blueberry jam in the bag; I just can’t get that into the cup. Grind finer, longer ratio, hotter water? I’m down to half a bag.
Two months ago my hearts looked like potatoes. I finished the last lesson yesterday and this morning I poured my first clean six-layer tulip in a Brightwave Camp Mug. Thank you, Elena, for the feedback on my milk texture!
I’m doing the Live Q&A on Tuesday, October 13 at 5:30 PM Pacific. Drop your questions here and I’ll answer the most-liked ones first. Anything goes: roast development, why naturals behave differently, how we pick lots, or what I drink on my day off.
Trying the Kenya on a flat-bottom dripper: 16 g to 260 g, two pours, 3:10 total. It’s juicy but the finish is a little dry. Coarser, or fewer pours?
Deep-cleaned my burrs on Sunday and now every setting pulls faster than before. Did I put something back wrong, or was all that old coffee actually changing the grind?
Forty-something attempts and today it finally happened. Small, a bit lopsided, but definitely a heart.
Every rosetta leans left, like it’s trying to escape the cup. I pour with my right hand and start in the middle. Is it my wrist or the cup angle?
Looking for a starting point. I do 15 g with 230 g of water at 90°C, steep 1:30, then press. It’s fine, but flat. What’s yours?
My oat milk either turns into bubbles or stays completely flat. Which barista oat milk works for you, and do you steam it cooler than dairy?
Switched from the Huila to the Sunrise Espresso Blend for flat whites and everything tastes a little ashy. 18 g in, 36 g out, 30 seconds. Is this a roast level thing, or am I over-extracting?
Budget is around $200. I mostly brew V60 and the occasional AeroPress, one or two cups a day. Is a good hand grinder better than a cheap electric at this price, or will I regret cranking every morning?
Quick one for the roast planning meeting: which coffee are you brewing most this week?
